The Rhode Island Council on the Arts was created in 1967 to help create an interest in the arts and increase participation.  They feel it is their responsibility to:

  • Stimulate the growth of the state's arts and the public's participation in them
  • Survey and assess the needs of the arts state-wide, and to make recommendations to the Governor and the General Assembly
  • Provide educational opportunities in the arts
  • Actively support and encourage the expansion of the state's cultural resources
  • Promote and protect freedom of artistic expression

The Rhode Island Council on the Arts’ website provides information on resources for individuals, art education, and folk art.  Individuals can find job openings, as well as other opportunities to get involved with art in the community.  There is information about the grants, such as deadlines, applications, guidelines, and requirements for the grants.  There is also information on past grant recipients.  There is information on some of the special projects the Council gets involved with, such as Artist Health Care Initiative, State Employees Art Show, and Scenes of Rhode Island.  There is a directory that contains artists, venues, and resources information and also information on the public art that can be found around Rhode Island.
